E-Bike Battery Recycling Made Simple at Northtowne Cycling + Fitness

Electric bikes are transforming the way Americans move cutting down car trips, lowering carbon footprints, and opening the door to more time outside. But with millions of e-bikes on the road, there’s one important responsibility every rider shares: properly recycling e-bike batteries at the end of their life.

At Northtowne, we’re here to make that process easy, safe, and even a little fun.

What Is the Call2Recycle E-Bike Battery Program?

Call2Recycle is the leading battery stewardship program in the U.S. and Canada. Backed by PeopleForBikes and dozens of major e-bike brands, the program ensures that end-of-life e-bike batteries are collected, transported, and recycled safely.

How It Works

1.          Industry Collaboration – E-bike brands fund the program to support responsible recycling.

2.          Retailer Network – Shops like Northtowne serve as trained collection sites.

3.          Rider Participation – You drop off your old battery…easy and free!

4.          Safe Recycling – Call2Recycle handles transport and processing to recover valuable materials.

What counts as an “electric bicycle”?

PeopleForBikes recognizes three classes of e-bikes:

•            Class 1: Pedal assist only, up to 20 mph

•            Class 2: Throttle assist, up to 20 mph

•            Class 3: Pedal / Throttle Assist, up to 28 mph

If a product goes faster than 28 mph or lacks functional pedals, it’s not considered an e-bike under this system.

Why This Program Matters

More than 12 million e-bikes are expected to be sold in the U.S. between 2020 and 2030. That’s 12 million batteries that will eventually need responsible recycling.

PeopleForBikes and Call2Recycle created this program to ensure riders and retailers have a safe, reliable, and sustainable way to manage e-bike batteries at the end of their life. Northtowne is proud to be part of that effort.

Any safety tips for battery care?

•            Never charge your battery unattended or overnight

•            Use only the charger that came with your bike

•            Plug directly into a wall outlet (no extension cords)

•            Store your bike and battery away from extreme temperatures and in a dry environment. Use Northtowne’s Winter Storage and Tune-Up Program!

•            Follow your manufacturer’s instructions
