Bike Fitting

A bike fit is a process where a trained fit expert works with a rider and their bike to fine tune ride position and comfort.  The fit expert conducts a rider interview to understand riding goals and obtain injury history; takes a physical assessment including taking measurements of the rider and their bike; observes rider in motion on the bike.  Using the data gathered, the fit expert will make recommendations on adjustments that can be made to the bike for the purpose of ensuring optimal riding comfort and efficiency. Because bikes are produced for the masses but individual body types are unique, a personalized fit session may lead to purchase of additional parts to accomplish the desired comfort and performance results.

The Northtowne Bike Fit

Northtowne Cycling & Fitness utilizes the Retül Fit system for bike fit assessments. Using Retül, we record a rider's position while they are in motion, which gives us the most realistic picture of the rider's actual pedal strokes and body positions during a ride.  Using 3D motion capture technology, the Retül Fit system accurately measures every degree of movement and millimeter of distance providing you and the fitter with data to support the choices made during the fit.

Fit Process: What you can Expect

Rider Interview: Every fit starts with this critical step.  The fitter conducts a rider interview to collect information regarding cycling goals and injury history.

Physical Assessment:  The physical assessment is gaining a complete understanding of your flexibility and unique physical attributes to identify limitations that may impact your position on the bike.

Retül Motion Capture: Retül motion capture assesses saddle position, cleat placement, handlebar position, and stem length while you are pedaling.  The most unique feature of the Retül Fit system is an observation of the rider from the front to ensure hips, knees and feet are properly aligned for improved comfort, performance and injury prevention.

Meet Northtowne's Fit Expert Graham Wood

" I've been riding bikes pretty much my whole life. My first RAGBRAI was with my dad when I was 10 years old.  I have always been a competitive person and started racing my bike in my teenage years and raced through my mid-thirties.  I recently caught the gravel bug and have ridden more gravel than hard-surface miles over the last four years or so.  As a former personal trainer, I have always had an interest in human anatomy and kinesiology.  The biomechanics of cycling fulfills this interest for me.  As the bike fitter for Northtowne, I am committed to helping people be more comfortable, efficient and injury free on their bike.  Being more comfortable, avoiding injury and discomfort will allow you to ride your bike more to achieve your cycling goals.  I would love to help you reach your cycling goals!"
